Welcome to Zoom Microscopes
Do I need a zoom microscope? Is it worth the extra money compared to a fixed magnification stereo microscope? To answer that question, ask yourself how much time you plan to spend under the microscope. If you plan on having long hours under the microscope on a frequent basis, it is reasonable to conclude that the extra expense of upgrading to a zoom microscope will be well worth the price. To have a tool to do the job is good. To have the best tool for the job is great. A zoom microscope will generally last for many years of service under normal use. Be sure to keep it dry, don’t drop the optics, and turn off the light when not in use. The most common repair on a microscope is the electrical. As with any electronics, these may need servicing at times. The most common need is to replace the microscope bulb and sometimes a fuse. But plan on your zoom microscope lasting for many years.
A zoom microscope system consists of a stereo microscope that has zoom optics in the magnification. Simply turn the zoom knob and you have continuously variable magnification for either increasing or decreasing the power. This is a substantial improvement over the old style fixed magnification microscopes that have a single power and must have a turret rotated to change the objective pair. In these types of microscopes, there is an actual objective pair that is replaced in the optical path. The normal objective pair is probably a 1x or 2x. When rotated, the 3x or 4x objective pair is moved into the optical path. The microscopist has no other choices for the objectives. In the zoom microscope, the zoom optics work on a principle of moving optics at a distance, allowing the magnification to be set at any incremental amount within their full zoom operating range.
We carry a full line of zoom microscopes. If you need binocular or trinocular versions, we have them. Be sure to include a USB microscope camera with the purchase of the zoom microscope to allow capability to connect with a computer and capture high resolution still images.
